SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police officer Mohammed Ayub Pandith, who was posted outside the old city’s Jamia Masjid (mosque), was brutally attacked and killed by a mob late last night.

When the police officer, a resident of Srinagar’s Nowpora area, was being lynched by a mob of more than 200, there were hundreds of people inside the mosque offering congregational prayers.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who attended a wreath laying ceremony at the police lines here said that the officer had been betrayed by the same people he was protecting. “What can be bigger murder of trust”, she added.
