23 Army personnel missing in Teesta flash flood

Siliguri: Twenty-three Army personnel are reported missing due to a massive cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in north Sikkim triggering flash floods in Teesta river.

Sources have informed the flash flood was triggered by the Chungthang Dam as all gates of Dikchu Dam were opened. Soon, Singtam Laal Bazar dubmerged and Dikchu Bazar was put on high Alert.

The Adarsh Gaon (Singtam) Bridge has also got swept away.

Army’s Eastern Command, according to some reports, has said some Army establishments along Lachen valley have been affected.

Eastern Command Aqua Node Teesta, an area adjacent to Divison Ordnance Unit (DOU) meant for Rafting training was washed away early Wednesday morning at 2 AM due to flash flood. According to sources, about 40 Vehicles were parked there enroute to Siliguri at that time. The vehicles with around 23 combatant drivers are missing. Water was flowing not far from the Divison Ordnance Unit (DOU) on Wednesday afternoon.

The traffic on the highway to Siliguri is badly affected. People, both men and women, living along the river were seen climbing hills to safer places.
