The Lament of a Kashmiri Pandit

Dr. G. Shreekumar Menon

Within his depths a seething anger, a deep sorrow and in an unguarded moment he tearfully expressed the violence in his homeland.

"Politics was no concern of ours

terror was an uninvited  guest

slaughtering hundreds in the countryside

Some invented crisis

and the disconcerting sounds of gunfire made life in the valley

take an ominous quality.

Terrorist fanatics

financed anonymously

trained to infiltrate and disrupt

by threatened executions

and ruthless extortions.

Frightened innocents

leading lives of silent desperation

who among them know how many days remained?

even the Gods themselves do not know!

Lives running out

which direction to go

seeking safety from the murderous insanity for death and enforced fear

lurk everywhere

in our beautiful land

now a forgotten paradise.”
