International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Pune-Lonavla camp for Special Persons

Pune: United Nations Organisation has designated 3 December 2017 as International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD).

The 2006 UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is a positive step towards the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Various events are organised the world over to increase awareness for the rights of Persons with Disabilities, to create inclusive societies and for opportunities for Persons with Disabilities to explore their potential.

Seminars, talk shows, cultural functions are held at various places in India too, by Special Schools and Centres working with Persons with Disabilities.

Indian Society today has come a long way in terms of awareness and inclusivity. There remains many a mile to go before we can truly claim to be a fully inclusive society in terms of Awareness, Empathy, Accessible infrastructure at all public places like schools, hospitals, cinemas, railway stations, airports, restaurants, rest rooms etc.

We all need to work to enhance Self Esteem, Respect from society and confidence of these brothers and sisters with Disabilities. They are a valuable set of people with immense talent and can contribute positively to society. Creating more and more inclusive spaces, infrastructure and opportunities is the need of the hour.

Cdr Rajendra Pawar, Retd, of First Light Consultants Pune and Mrs Akila Vaidyanathan, Director of The AMAZE Charitable Trust, Coimbatore have been running Adventure camps for persons with special needs especially Autism. Akila is the pioneer in India of this unique concept of taking Special Persons and families out into nature for adventure activities.They are joined in their efforts by Mrs Padma Ramani, a Special Educator with vast experience based out of Pune.

Activities like Valley crossings, Burma bridge crossing, River crossing, Tarzan swing, Commando net climbing, treks through fruit and flower nurseries, nature trails, camp firesand tent staysare a unique experience at the Adventure Camps for Special Persons and Families.

Based on the feedback and anecdotal experiences of the camp participants, the following benefits have been observed amongst the Special children and their family members:

    • Improved Motor skills, Better attention&concentration for children

    • Children develop group skills and social skills
    • Families develop bond with other families
  • Attitudinal
    • Children develop positive attitude and overcome fear
    • Families have more belief in the potential of their children

    • Being with nature and doing fun activities
    • A much-needed break from the routine

 

The third such camp in Western India at the Camp Water’s Edge at Takwe village near Pune-Lonavla is taking place from 1 to 3 December. This camp includes 22 special persons with disabilities such as Autism, Down Syndrome, and fragile x syndrome belonging to families from Mumbai, Pune, Jabalpur, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Delhi.

On hearing about the first two camps conducted by them in 2015 and 2016, friends of Cdr Rajendra Pawar, Akila Vaidyanathan and Padma Ramani have voluntarily come forward this year to sponsor Special Persons form economically weaker segment to be able to participate in the present camp. This has helped enroll 4 participants along with two adults accompanying them in the camp.

The ongoing camp  is aimed at achieving the UNOs 2030 agenda of Sustainable Development and its theme for the 2017 IDPD is “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all”

The camp will help to sensitise society at large, Social Organisations such as Rotary & Lions Clubs, Corporate CSR Heads to support the efforts of First Light Consultants of Pune and Amaze Charitable Trust of Coimbatore in organising more of these camps for more and more of the Special Persons from Indian society along with other children from various schools.

This movement will help in transforming and creating a more inclusive mindset among citizens – especially future generation towards Persons with Disabilities and Special Needs.

CBI arrests zonal head of Bank of Maharashtra

Pune: The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a former Zonal Head, Pune City Zone, Bank of Maharashtra, and a director of a private logistics Company, based at Surat (Gujarat) in an on-going investigation of a bank fraud case.

CBI registered a case against the Surat based private logistics firm and 10 other persons and entities, including unknown officials of Bank of Maharashtra on the allegations that during the period 2012-2014, Bank of Maharashtra had sanctioned various credit facilities to the accused private logistics company, including Working Capital limit, Term Loans & loans to 2802 drivers of said company under “Chalak Se Malak” (from driver to owner) scheme for purchase of trucks.

The alleged loss caused to Bank of Maharashtra through this credit facility was Rs.836.29 crore. It was further alleged that the loans to the drivers were sanctioned without their knowledge and by using forged documents as genuine and the company did not utilize the loan proceeds for the purpose for which they were sanctioned. These loans were allegedly processed by the arrested accused (the then Zonal Head) by ignoring various irregularities and violating existing guidelines of the Bank for the purpose of sanctioning the loan. The other arrested accused is one of the directors in the company and authorised signatory to operate the company’s account.

Search was conducted at the residence of Bank Officer in Pune which led to recovery of electronic gadgets, LIC policies, FDs, two locker keys of banks and other related documents.

There are 3 more cases registered by CBI against the same private company; its directors and others for allegedly duping a few more banks including the Oriental Bank of Commerce, Bank of Baroda and Indian Overseas Bank. These banks allegedly have been defrauded to the tune of over Rs.1566.39 crore.

CBI conducts searches in the Dr. Dabholkar murder case

cbiNew Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation conducted searches at Pune and Panvel in Maharashtra at the premises of two persons in an on-going investigation into the alleged murder of Dr. Narendra Dabholkar, a resident of Pune.

CBI had registered a case on 9 May 2014 on a Bombay High Court order issued the same day in response to a Criminal Public Interest Litigation and taken up the investigation of the Dr.Narendra Dabholkar murder case which was initially registered at Deccan Police Station in Pune.

It was alleged that two un-identified persons aged about 25 to 30 years, of medium height, had fired bullets and killed Dr. Narendra Dabholkar, while he was taking a morning walk on footpath of Omkareshwar Bridge near Balgandharv Rangmandir in Pune. The two assassins had fled from the spot on a motorcycle.

Certain documents, mobile numbers, and E-mails recovered during searches, are being scrutinised. A Red Corner Notice had been issued by the Interpol against against a person in the Goa Blast Case of 2009.

IAS officer arrested in Pune for raping, molesting minor girls

ias-arrestedPune: An officer blonging to the elite Indian Administration Service (IAS), MH Sawant has been arrested in a shocking and bizzare case of sexual exploitation of minor girls in Pune, Maharashtra

The accused officer, arrested today, was currently holding the post of Director General of the Maharashtra Council of Agricultural Education and Research (MCAER). Sawant has been charged of sexually molesting and raping young 8 to 10 year old girls from the shanties near his apartment in the Sinhagad area here. The officer otehrwise lives in Shivaji Nagar locality of Pune.

The charge against Sawant is that he used to call the poor girls to the basement of his building on teh pretxt of giving them sweets and food and then used to show them obscene pictures and molest them. One of the girls has even accused him of raping her. The matter came to light after one of the victims told her teacher about what the IAS officer was doing to them.

Sawant is a promotee IAS officer. He was inducted into the Maharashtra cadre in 1998. He has held the posts of Deputy Secretary Sports, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Tribal Development and Commissioner Persons with disabilities department.

Sawant is an M.Com, LL.B. He underwent training for Community Mobilisation and Participatory Management at the Uttarakhand Academy of Administration at Nainital and has attended the Leadership Development Programme at Indian Institute of Management at Indore. He also did a course recently on “Improving Governance through Accountability” at National Academy of Audit & Accounts at Shimla
