Journalists should question and criticise without fear or favour: CM Kamal Nath inaugurates new session of Makhanlal University

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath has told journalists that they should pose questions and criticise the government without fear or favour.

The Chief Minister was speaking as chief guest the special programme ‘Towards Excellence 2019’ of Makhanlal Chaturvedi. National University of Journalism and Communication in the State capital on Saturday, 20 July 2019. He told the students of journalism that they should respect their profession and take an oath to serve the society with commitment.

Nath said that in order to strengthen democracy, it is necessary for journalism to stay away from temptation and pressure and respect the Constitution of India, which gives us the right to express our thoughts. “It helps me a lot when I come across criticism of my government’s schemes and system in newspapers. I take action on it. It helps me to overcome the shortcomings of my government”, the Chief Minister added.

The Chief Minister told the new students of journalism that they are associated with a profession that considered to be an important pillar of democracy. asking the furture journalists to remain impartial, the Chief Minister said that fearless and impartial writing affects democracy in a positive way. The Chief Minister said that journalists and newspapers are not publications of the government. You have the right to criticize, he went on to underscore.

Nath told the students to understand the basic difference between education and knowledge. There is a limit to receiving education but knowledge can be acquired throughout life. He told the teachers of the university that they should connect their education system with today’s generation. Only if our education is in accordance with the changes taking place both at the domestic and global levels, we shall be able to give a better future to our upcoming generation, he said.

Dr. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, had helped many countries in framing their Constititution, Nath said adding “our Constitution gives the message of unity in diversity. Our’s is a pluraristic society and we can never flourish if we do not rescpect this character.”

7th payscale

The Chief Minister announced that 7th pay scale will be granted to University teachers, scholarships will be given to the SC/ST students and the University will contribute towards employees’ insurance. He said that the government is commited to extending full support to the university in developing it as an excellent institution. He hoped that every student will establish the prestige of the University by turning into an independent and unbiased journalist.

On this occasion, the Chief Minister released the syllabus for the new session.

University Vice Chancellor Deepak Tiwari said that the University was established at the initiative of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He had expressed this desire to set up the university at a programme organized in memory of Pandit Makhanlal Chaturvedi 32 years ago at Khandwa.

The Vice-Chancellor said that the University is moving towards the path of excellence keeping in view the the letter and spirit of the Constitution. he went on to inform the gathering that a new Department of Propaganda Studies is being set up in the University to make the students of journalism aware and alert regarding the rising trend of fake news in social media.
