Bengaluru: Karnataka unit president of the BJP, BS Yedyurappa was today sworn in as State Chief Minister, after the Supreme Court of India, at a mid-night hearing, refused to pass an injunction to stay the Governor’s invite to Yeddyurappe for the formation of a BJP Government.

During the course of hearing in response to a petition by Congress JDS combine, the apex court directed the Attorney General of India, KK Venugopal, to produce the letter written by BJP Karnataka leader BS Yeddyurappa to the state’s governor by this afternoon. The next hearing in this matter has been fixed on Friday, May 19. The letter in question mentions the number of MLAs supporting the BJP.

The Congress and Janata Dal (Secular), after claiming the right to form government in Karnataka, submitted a late night application to the Supreme Court registrar seeking to file petitions against the decision of the Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala to invite the BJP to form government in the state. Their contention is that he BJP with 104 winning candidates lacks the necessary majority of 112, whereas they jointly command a strength of 116 MLAs – 78 belonging to the Congress, 37 to the JD(S) and one independent MLA.
