Sutton journo UN officialLondon : Friends, colleagues, family and followers of a former BBC journalist and UN official found dead in a bathroom in Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport are calling for a full investigation into her death.Briton Jacqueline (Jacky) Sutton, 50, was found hanged Saturday in a restroom at the airport’s international transit terminal, Turkey’s state-sponsored news agency reported, citing Istanbul police.

Sutton’s death have raised doubts in the manner in which her body was found hanging at the airport washroom, which was declared as a death by suicide by local Istanbul authorities. The circumstances of this mishap were unclear and thus forced acceleration of demands for a deeper, thorough investigation immediately. Sutton was the acting Iraq director for the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) and had been travelling to Irbil, northern Iraq.

BBC correspondent Ben Ando said Sutton arrived at Ataturk Airport on a flight from London on Saturday and had a two-hour wait for a connecting flight, which she apparently missed.’Local media are reporting that she didn’t have enough money to purchase a replacement ticket and then she was found dead in the toilets a couple of hours later,’ he added, concluding, ‘What exactly happened though is not known.’

The London-based IWPR supports local journalism in countries affected by conflict and crisis.Sutton had been studying for a PhD at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Australian National University. Her research focused on international development support to female media professionals in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2003 and 2013.She worked for the BBC World Service between 1998 and 2000, reporting from Africa, the Middle East and London. She also served in senior roles at the United Nations.

Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed the death of a British national in Turkey, saying embassy staff was assisting the family of the deceased and that British officials would remain in close contact with Turkish authorities.

News of Sutton’s death caused an outpouring of grief on Twitter, with friends and former colleagues expressing skepticism and disbelief on Turkish news which claimed a suicide, and the well wishers are calling for a full investigation into her death.
