Chautauqua, N.Y: India-born author Salman Rushdie was attacked brutally when he was about to give a lecture in western New York.
According to available news report, a man climbed the stage at the Chautauqua Institution and started stabbing Rushdie when he was being introduced to the audience.
The publication of his book – Satanic Verses – in 1988 and the fatwā issued against him because of this book had led to violence around the world. Muslim communities in many countries held public rallies and copies of the book were publicly set aflame. Many of those associated with translating or publishing the book were attacked, injured, and even assassinated. A bounty of over $3 million also was announced for anyone who kills Rushdie.
Rushdie’s novel, Midnight’s Children won the Booker Prize in 1981.
