Colombo: After months of foreign currency crisis and acute food and fuel shortages, besides galloping inflation, angry protestors on Saturday, 9 July 2022, stormed the residence of Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in Colombo to demand his resignation.
President Rajapaksa fled his official residence before the protestors entered the compound.
The protestors were everywhere, inside Rajapaksa’s bedroom, and the presidential kitchen. Hundreds of them were also all around or inside the swimming pool in the President’s imposing house
According to available reports, 16 MPs from Rajapaksa’s Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party have requested for his immediate resignation. After a call given by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in the wake of the unprecedented protest, party leaders were huddled in an emergency meeting later during the day to discuss the situation and resolve the crisis.
The Sri Lankan Police have imposed a curfew in several police divisions in western province.
