Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, within days of the brutal murder of two persons – one in Udaipur in Rajasthan and the other in Amravati, Maharashtra – for their social media posts supporting Nupur Sharma, who has been suspended from the BJP over her Prophet remark, has asserted “the atmosphere in the country has been created by the ruling dispensation. It is not the person who made the comment. It is the Prime Minister, it is the Home Minister, it is the BJP and the RSS that has created this environment in the country. This environment of anger, this environment of hatred, and frankly, the creation of this environment in the country is an anti-national act.”
His hate environment charge notwithstanding, Rahul Gandhi had, through a tweet on 28 June, demanded the most severe punishment for the brutal murder of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur. Such barbaric acts in the name of religion will not be tolerated, he stated adding “together we have to defeat hatred”.
The Congress leader, who on Friday 1 July 2022, visited his office in Wayanad, Kerala, which was recently vandalised by active members of the SFI, the students’ wing of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) told media-persons: “the children who did this – they are also children – so it’s not, fine, its not a good thing to do, but they have acted in an irresponsible way. I don’t have any anger or hostility towards them. They have done a silly thing. So we should leave it at that. I don’t think they, sort of, understand… you know, the consequences of these things. So I think we should be forgiving as far as they are concerned.”
