Keeping in tune with the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs), Looms of Ladakh is working towards realising sustainable livelihoods for the herder-artisan community through a participatory profit-sharing business model run by the designer and herder-artisans and also ensuring ecological balance.
Abhilasha Bahuguna, the co-founder of Looms of Ladakh, who was present at the foundation stone laying ceremony, feels the only way they could hope to achieve their long-term goals is by bringing together the rural women and ensuring they had greater ownership in the industry, as active participants in the craft as well as its business, rather than being valued only for their labour.
In sharp contrast, when the luxury fashion industry has mostly been a male dominated industry, Looms of Ladakh is a women cooperative with the village producer groups representative in the Governing Board being women which is always going to be more than 50 per cent.
Looms of Ladakh is making efforts for regular decent work that can compete with the best in global fashion industry and lead to economic growth by building the manufacturing capacity of the luxury fibre industry of Ladakh.
