Devprayag: A cloud burst at Devprayag in Tehri district of Uttarakhand on Tuesday 11th May uprooted and damaged several shops and houses.
The cloudburst was reported at 5 pm. Around 12-13 shops and several properties have been damaged. Most of these shops were closed due to lockdown. Water level was rising in the area and rescue operation was underway.
This is the third such cloudburst in a year in this area. First it was in Reni village in February this year. Reni village is where Sundarlal Bahuguna’s famous Chipko Movement started. Then we had in Tehri, Uttarkashi and Rudraprayag on Monday 3 May and today at Devprayag.
Cloud bursts at short intervals in Uttarakhand point towards ecological havoc caused by reckless development and the encroachment and clearing of the Himalyan slopes and catchments. All this is aggravating the situation vis-a-vis climate change. The situation also raises a question mark on the leadership in Uttarakhand, which is either incapable or has completely abdicated its responsibility in favour of vested interests.
