Court convicts Priest and Nun in the Sister Abhaya murder case

New Delhi/ Thiruvanathapuram: The Special Judge for CBI Cases, Thiruvanathapuram (Kerala) on Tuesday 22 December convicted Father Thomas Kottoor and Sister Sephy in the 28-year old case related to death of Sister Abhaya.

CBI had registered the case related to death of Sister Abhaya. She was missing since the morning of 27 March 1992 and subsequently, found dead. Her body was recovered from a well situated within the premises of a Hostel at Kottayam, where she was an inmate.

The case was earlier registered vide Crime No.187/1992 at Kottayam West Police Station (Kerala) and re- registered as Crime No. 142/1992 by State CB-CID.

During investigation, CBI arrested 3 accused. Polygraph, brain mapping and narco analysis tests of accused & others were conducted. After thorough investigation, CBI filed charge sheet before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ernakulam against the three accused. The case was later transferred to the Court of Special Judge, Thiruvananthapuram. The charges were framed against Father Thomas Kottoor & Sister Sephy on 5 August 2019. During the trail, 49 witnesses were examined.The Trial Court found two of the accused guilty and convicted them. The accused were remanded to Judicial Custody. The matter has been posted for sentence on 23 December 2020.
