Terrorist attack in Austria; State mourning till Nov 5

Vienna: In the evening hours of November 2, 2020, there was a terrorist attack, being described as “Islamist terror shooting” in the city center of the Austrian capital. There have been five fatalities, including one attacker, and numerous injuries.

The attackers fired at six different locations. The incident began near the synagogue at the city centre.

Our prayers are with the people of Vienna after yet another vile act of terrorism in Europe. These evil attacks against innocent people must stop. Numerous emergency services were pressed into service and risking their own lives, the security personnel were able to eliminate an assassin and look after the injured and bring countless people to safety.

The Federal Government of Austria is using all available resources to take stock of the situation and collect all material and information relating to the crime.

For this heinous act and the attack on the freedom and democracy of the Republic of Austria, state mourning has been ordered up to Thursday, starting from Tuesday November 3.

In accordance with the protocol, federal buildings were immediately flagged for mourning for a period of three days and the governors invited to make a similar order for public buildings in the federal states.

In addition, one minute of silence was observed nationwide Tuesday at 12 noon. In addition, a request has been made to the public schools to hold a minute of silence at the beginning of Wednesday’s class.

The Federal Government will lay a wreath in memory of the victims in Vienna’s inner city together with the Federal President and the President of the National Council, chairmen of the parties represented in Parliament and the Mayor of Vienna.

The Republic of Austria and the Federal Government have resolved to defend freedom, democracy and the values ​​of our coexistence and with all necessary means. In addition, it has also been reiterated that Austria will work together with its international partners and friends to fight terrorism and extremism.
