Adis Ababa: After the massacre of 300, 000 people alone in Darfur since 2003 (UN figures), the Sudanese authorities heading a transitional Government have agreed to rebel groups and separated religion from the State, ending 30-year long Islamic rule and converting Sudan into a democratic nation.

There was pressure from the non-Muslim ethnic communities to go for this historic and momentous change as the non-Muslim regions had remained starkly backward and positions were not being given to the the non-Muslims. As a result, there was widespread anger and rage due to marginalisation of a huge population. – Newsroom24x7

The historic agreement between the Sudanese leaders and rebel commanders was signed on 31 August 2020. The agreement was signed in Adis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital. The signatories to the agreement are the Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and leaders of Sudan’s People’s Liberation Movement-North rebel group Abdel-Aziz al-Hilu.

The agreement says:

For Sudan to become a democratic country where the rights of all citizens are enshrined, the constitution should be based on the principle of ‘separation of religion and state,’ in the absence of which the right to self-determination must be respected,” the declaration stated.
