Police brutality: Guna Collector, SP removed after excessive use of force against farmers accused of encroaching government land
Bhopal/Guna: The administration in Guna, a district in the Gwalior division of Madhya Pradesh in central India, has come under severe attack from civil society after videos and photos showing dozens of police personnel barbarically dragging and beating a farmer and his wife while their children kept wailing and crying for mercy went viral on Wednesday 15 July.
The victim couple, who are from the deprived sections, drank pesticide in a suicide attempt on Tuesday after they were forced to watch their crops set on fire.
This one incident of Police brutality, involving even women cops, has shaken the State Government at the top. The Government, at the initiative of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan went into immediate action and as a first step removed both the Guna district Collector and the Superintendent of Police. A high level inquiry also has been ordered into this incident.
According to available information the police team along with other officials were engaged in an anti-encroachment drive on Tuesday 14 July and had used excessive force against farmers who had encroached upon government land for agriculture purpose.
