New Delhi: A Delhi Police head constable and 3 civilans were killed and a deputy commissioner of police injured along with at least 50 others as clashes erupted over the Citizenship Amendment Act in northeast Delhi’s Jaffrabad and Maujpur on Monday.
Ahead of US President Donald Trump’s arrival in Delhi on Monday evening, anti- CAA protesters, as if in a well timed and pre-planned move went berserk after citizens came out in support of CAA. They began stone pelting and indulged in large-scale arson. many shops and vehicleswere torched and there was huge damage to property.
Violence between groups supporting and opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) was also reported in the Chandbagh and Bhajanpura areas.
Police fired tear gas shells and also resorted lathicharge to disperse the violent crowd of protesters.
Ratan Lal, a head constable posted in the office of the ACP Gokalpuri, was killed. Several police personnel, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Shahdara, Amit Sharma, were injured in action.
The police imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC to prohibit assembly of four or more people, in areas affected by violence in northeast Delhi.
