Washington DC: The US President Donald Trump has been impeached on two counts by the House of Representatives and this has set the stage for his trial in the Senate that would decide whether or not he would remain in office.
Trump has become third US president to be impeached.
Trump has been impeached for (1) abuse of power by soliciting the interference of Ukraine in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, and (2) obstruction of Congress by directing defiance of certain subpoenas issued by the House of Representatives.
As Republicans have majority in the Senate, it is unlikely he will be removed from power. Hence there is every indication that the House of Representative might delay sending the Articles of impeachment to the senate. In this scenario, there would be no acquittal for Trump before the Presidential election later this year.
The House on Wednesday, 18 December 2019 considered and gave its nod to the House Resolution (H. Res. 755) impeaching Donald John Trump, President of the United States, for high crimes and misdemeanors (On Agreeing to the Resolution). After the House proceeded with six hours of debate on H. Res. 755, the Senate agreed to Article I and II of the Resolution impeaching Donald John Trump for high crimes and misdemeanors
