Protest against Citizenship Amendment Act: Police raids Jamia campus

New Delhi: Protests swept campuses across the country against the police crackdown at Jamia Millia Islamia after Sunday evening’s violence over the new citizenship law. Students at the Aligarh Muslim University clashed with the police after their solidarity march was stopped. By midnight, Hyderabad’s Maulana Azad Urdu University and the Banaras Hindu University raised their voices. In Delhi, hundreds gathered outside the Police Headquarters in response to a call from the students of Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Delhi Police launched a massive offensive against Jamia students inside the Jamia Milia Islamia Unviersity campus after a protest against the Citizenship Amenment Act went out of control and the police force was locked in a pitched battle with rioting students who went berserk torching and vandalising vehicles and property on Sunday evening.

This was followed by protests in campuses across the country. In Aligarh Muslim University, the students clashed with the POlice when they were stopped from taking out a solidarity procession. Protests were also held in Jawaharlal Nehru University and Benaras Hindu University.

Waseem Ahmed Khan, Chief Proctor, Jamia Millia Islamia University told media that Police entered the campus by force and no permission was given. The staff and students were being beaten up and forced to leave the campus.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: “No one should indulge in violence. Any kind of violence is unacceptable. Protests should remain peaceful.”

Meanwhile, a group of Jamia Millia students have issued a statement disassociating themselves from violence during protest against Citizenship Act

Visuals are being shared by people on social media showing AAP leader Amanullah Khan with rioting mob. Tweets have gone viral stating that he was leading the protest and was responsible for torching public vehicles.
