New Delhi: Sonia Gandhi, 20-months after she demitted office paving the way for her son Rahul Gandhi to head the Indian National Congress, was on Saturday, 10 August 2019, named interim Congress president.

The announcement came on Saturday night after the Congress Working Committee, which met for the second time in quick succession the same day, accepted Rahul Gandhi’s resignation from the post of Congress President.

Several State Congress units and party leaders urged Rahul to continue but he declined the request and announced that he would be leaving for Kerala on Sunday to oversee and join party workers engaged in flood relief.
