New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, 8 August 2019, urged those opposing the abrogation of Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir to keep national interest above all and help the government give a new direction to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

“We should not forget that the patriots of Jammu and Kashmir are standing firm against all moves by Pakistan to spread terrorism and separatism,” Modi said adding that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have faith in the Indian Constitution and they have the right to lead a good life.

Article 370 and 35A have not benefitted the people but only helped the separatists and contributed towards spreading terrorism, perpetuating the rule of a few families and in breeding large-scale corruption, the PM pointed out.

His message to the people of India, especially the political parties, is significant as it comes two days after Parliament approved the scrapping of provisions of Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and also the Bill to bifurcate the state into two union territories.

In a democracy,it is obvious that some people support and some oppose (the Government), the Prime Minister said referring to the the discussion in parliament on Article 370. The Centre is responding and addressing the concerns, he reiterated undersscoring the Government’s “democratic duty to do so”. He urged the detractors to keep the national interest above all, emain united and support the government at this juncture. Irrespective of who voted in support or who did not, the need of the hour is to unitedly move forward, he said.

Drawing attention to the “few who are wanting to vitiate the atmosphere”, the Prime Minister said that “brothers and sisters of Kashmir” are giving them a befitting reply.

The Prime Minister said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir believe in the Indian Constitution and they have every right to live a good life. “The situation will soon be normal there and people’s problems will reduce,” he said.
