New Delhi: The controversial Bill that would make instant triple talaq a criminal offence was passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday, 25 July 2019.
Lok Sabha passed Triple Talaq Bill with 303 votes in favour of the Bill & 78 votes against the Bill.
As the triple talaq bill was passed with 303 votes in favour, the Congress staged a walkout to protest against the bill. Earlier, Janata Dal (United) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs, also staged a walkout in protest against the bill that criminalises instant divorce.
Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in Lok Sabha: “There have been 345 cases of triple talaq after the judgment till July 24. Should we leave these women on roads? I am a minister in Narendra Modi govt and not in Rajiv Gandhi Government”.
The Government will face hurdle in Rajya Sabha regarding the passage of this Bill.
Participating in the discussion on triple Talaq Bill, N K Premachandran of Revolutionary Socialist Party said in Lok Sabha: “Why are you not enforcing imprisonment for divorce in the Hindu and Christian communities? Why alone in Muslim community? This is discrimination against Muslim community”.
Let’s make it clear: @incindia did not defend triple talaq. We welcomed the SupremeCourt judgement that declared it void. But we strongly opposed criminalising a civil offence of just 1 community. Bill punishes Muslim men while doing nothing2promote the interests of Muslim women.
