Goa CM Promod Sawant proves majority in Assembly

Panaji: Goa’s new Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who took the oath of office early on Tuesday following the demise CM Manohar Parrikar, proved the BJP-led government’s majority in the State Assembly on Wednesday.

Twenty MLAs, including 11 of the BJP, three each from Goa Forward Block, MGP and Independents, extended support to the new chief minister during a special session of the House convened by Governor Mridula Sinha.

All the 14 Congress MLAs and one from NCP were against the motion.

The Goa Assembly on Wednesday condoled the death of former chief minister Manohar Parrikar, and two other prominent BJP leaders in the state. Offering his condolences, Chief Minister Sawant said: “Today, if I am an MLA and sitting on this chair, I owe it to him.”
