Chennai: At least nine persons died and a number of others were injured when police opened fire on a violent mob protesting against Sterlite Copper, a unit of Vedanta Limited, at Tuticorin on Tuesday (22 May 2018).

People have been demanding and agitating for the closure of Stellite Copper 400,000 metric tonne per year smelter unit. People are agitated and have environment related concerns. Their grudge is that the unit in question is pollution ground water in the area.
