MP bye-elections: Point Counter Point
Bhopal: An NDTV bye-election analysis with the heading “Congress’ Madhya Pradesh Results Should Concern Rahul Gandhi” tries to ring the alarm bell for the Congress party instead of showing the full mirror to the ruling Bharatiya.Janata Party.
The piece in question, obviously meant for the ignorant and the gullible, leaves aside almost every aspect of BJP’s reckless campaign in Kolaras and Mungaoli and targets the Congress by raising the issue of groupism and focusing more on its reduced margin of victory by stating: “This was the last electoral contest before Madhya Pradesh votes for its next government and the vastly reduced margins of victory for the Congress (it held both the seats) should worry the party. The results are a pointer to the battle-ready formidable BJP election machinery which served up a tough fight to Scindia after 14 years of Shivraj Singh Chouhan being in power.”
Lalit Shastri counters:
The NDTV piece is by someone who is either serving a narrow agenda or else knows nothing about electoral politics and all the factors that have led to the outcome of the just concluded bye-elections in Madhya Pradesh. What has been churned out as election analysis only serves the interests of the ruling BJP in Madhya Pradesh.
One could compare Congress’ latest victory margin with the 2013 election only if money power and the ruling party’s reckless electioneering had not been a factor. In these elections, there are reports to support the charge that money was being channelised by the ruling side during the final stages of electioneering. State Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and so many ministers were also engaged in announcing goodies despite the model code of conduct. The Chief Minister was even admonished by the Election Commission on this count….Also it should not be forgotten that last time, the winning candidate was late Mahendra Singh Kalukheda – a towering figure. His victory margin should not be compared with that of a lesser known face this time….Let the BJP, a clear loser use the victory margin theory to build a smokescreen to cover people’s disenchantment, but such a projection was not expected from ndtv…..It’s time to acknowledge Congress party’s victory in full measure.
Also, it is not appropriate to paint this as an electoral battle only between Shivraj and Scindia. It was Scindia, as the most popular face of the Congress, pitted against team Modi, represented by Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar – a political heavy weight from Gwalior, team Amit Shah, represented by BJP national vice President and former State BJP Chief Prabhat Jha, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his dozen and half ministers who campaigned with no holds barred, the ruling BJP led by Nandkumar Singh Chouhan and also the committed babus.
