22 dead in Mumbai’s Elphinstone Road railway station stampede
Mumbai: When the nation was celebrating Navratri and it was time to herald Dussehra – the festival to mark the victory of good over evil – Elphinstone Road railway station in this financial capital of India, was struck by a ghastly disaster on Friday. Here 22 lives were lost and more than three dozen persons were grievously injured in a stampede as a large crowd tried to surge through a narrow rickety foot overbridge linking Parel and Elphinstone Road stations. People were rushing crushing others on the way only to escape getting drenched in rain. According a eyewitnesses, what led to the stampede was the arrival of at least three local trains within a short time.
The Union Railways Minister has ordered the Railway Board to conduct probe and submit a report into the ghastrly tragedy. Meanwhile leaders from a couple of political parties have tried to take mileage from this tragedy and issued the threat that they would not allow the Bulltet Train- Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet high speed train project between Ahmedebad and Mumbai to take off.
