Modi expands Cabinet: Nirmala Sitharaman gets Defence

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra modi today expanded his Cabinet by elevating four ministers and inducting nine new faces, including four former bureaucrats before leaving on a 3-day visit to China to attend the BRICS Summit.

Today’s Cabinet rejig has catapulted Nirmala Sitharaman to a higher level as she has been elevated and given the important Defence portfolio. Along with Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Ms. Sitharaman will be a member of the powerful Cabinet Committee on Security, headed by the Prime Minister.

Significantly Suresh Prabhu’s Railway portfolio now goes to Piyush Goyal.

The new ministers sworn-in today are Shiv Pratap Singh, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Dr. Virendra Kumar, Anantkumar Hegde, Raj Kumar Singh, Hardeep Singh Puri, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Dr. Satya Pal Singh and Alphons Kannanthanam
