UP Hospital deaths: Congress demands probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge
Gorakhpur/New Delhi: The death of 62 children due to lack of oxygen supply in a Gorakhpur hospital – has left the entire nation in a state of shock.
The count of the dead has kept rising over the last couple of days. Even today (12 August 2017), there has been a casualty at Baba Raghav Das Medical college. In the midst of the disastrous situation, apparently the result of the refusal by the oxygen supplier to maintain supplies due to non-payment of outstanding bills exceeding Rs. 6 million, Uttar Pradesh Health Minister Sidharth Nath Singh has gone on record saying that no child had died due to shortage of oxygen supply.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is constantly monitoring the situation in Gorakhpur. He has been in constant touch with authorities from the Central and UP Governments. Today he also directed Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel to take stock of the situation as a priority.
Congress party has questioned the investigation ordered by the UP Government into the hospital deaths and sought a probe either by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court or a Parliamentary panel. Dubbing the suspension of the principal of the Med College as an eyewash, Congress has demanded dismissal of the state health Minister.
