Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today stepped down after the Supreme Court of Pakistan unanimously voted for disqualifying him from holding office and referred his case to the country’s top anti-corruption authority for conducting a probe into his family’s offshore assets exposed by the Panama Papers.

The landmark verdict against Sharif was announced by a five-member bench of the Supreme Court before a packed courtroom here.

ICIJ has reported that “the outcome marked a perhaps predictable end to a process that had consisted of one negative finding after another for the prime minister and his family after the Panama Papers reported on April 3, 2016 that his family owned expensive properties in London through offshore companies”.
