Iran is also a threat to regional stability and their full range of activities extend far beyond the nuclear threat.
This is how Heather Nauert, the US Department of State Spokesperson, spelt out the US perception of Iran at a press briefing here on Tuesday (18 July 2017).
Focusing on ballistic missile development and proliferation; support to terrorism and militancy; Nauert said Iran is complicit in the Assad regime’s atrocities against its own people; unrelenting hostility to Israel that continues and has continued for quite some time. She also went on to point out that they have consistently threatened freedom of navigation, especially in the Persian Gulf; and were linked with cyberattacks on the United States.
According ot the US State Department Spokesperson, the American administration wants to get Iran to try to adhere to the spirit of the agreement between the P5+1+EU and Iran on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) for the regional and international peace and security.
The European allies, partners and friends of the US are interested in adhering to the JCPOA. while Iran is in compliance with the agreement, there are still a lot of things that Iran is doing that is very troubling to the US administration. Hence the US is pushing on the Iranian regime to stop its destabilizing activities, the Spokesperson observed.
Further on Iran, Nauert said that the United States has cautioned American citizens against travel to Iran.
Simultaneously at the White House press briefing, the Press Secretary to the US President Sarah Sanders yesterday (18 July) spoke about President Donald Trump’s direction and said they are working with the US allies to explore options for addressing the serious flaws of the JCPOA. Even as we continue to work to prevent Iran from ever obtaining a nuclear weapon, we cannot look away while Iran threatens our country and our allies in ways beyond their nuclear threat, she said.
Policy review- Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan
Policy reviews by the US are continuing for Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran, Nauert said adding the US administration is concerned about the destabilizing activities that Iran remains involved with, whether it’s supporting terrorism or other things as well.
Answering a query regarding North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea), the spokesperson said that the US and South Korea share the very same goal, and that is a denuclearized Korean Peninsula. “We’ve both remain very concerned about the activities of the DPRK, the launching of the intercontinental ballistic missile, for example, and we want to see a complete and verifiable, irreversible denuclearization of the peninsula”, she observed.
China – border stand-off with India
On the briefing by China to a lot of diplomats, including the U.S. diplomat, about the ongoing border stand-off with India, Nauert said that the United States is concerned about the ongoing situation there. The US administration believes that both sides would work together for some sort of arrangement for peace, she pointed out.
