Voting for Srinagar LS seat: 8 killed, several injured
Srinagar: Eight persons were killed as security forces were forced to open fire to control stone pelting mobs that went on a rampage and indulged in an orgy of violence to disrupt the by-poll for Srinagar Lok Sabha seat today which saw a voter turnout dive to an all-time low of 7.14 per cent. Responding to a boycott call by secessionists, stone-pelting mobs set a polling station on fire and tried to torch two more polling stations.
As polling began, one person was killed and five others were injured when the BSF opened fire in Pakharpora near Charar-e-Sharif area to bring under control a stone-pelting mob.
In Budgam miscreants had started pelting stones on polling booths this morning. Shops, business establishments and petrol stations in Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal remained shut. Even public transport was disrupted.
