On the appointment of Deepak as Ambassador to WTO: TV reporting goes haywire
New Delhi The order of appointment yesterday of Telecom Secretary J.S. Deepak, lAS (UP:1982) as Officer on Special Duty in the Department of Commerce with immediate effect, in the rank and pay of Secretary, by temporarily upgrading a vacant post of Director in the Department of Commerce in place of Ms. Mugdha Sinha was misread to such an extent that a television news channel even went to the extent of flashing that Deepak had been “shunted out” from the Telecom Ministry whereas this appointment was only meant to pave the way for his immediate appointment as Ambassador/Permanent Representative of India to the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
In fact the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet had also approved and the Ministry of Personnel had issued a single order appointing Deepak as OSD and also as India’s Ambassador to WTO yesterday (March 1, 2017).
Deepak, who joined as Telecom Secretary on February 1, 2016 is borne on the UP cadre. In official circles he is known as a blue eyed boy of Principal Secretary in the PMO.
