Decision to scrap semester system in MP colleges questioned

There are not many who are convinced by the government’s new decision that it would pay the fees of all meritorious students cutting across the reserved and the unreserved categories. If the government is really serious, judicious and does not want to discriminate between different social groups, it would take a similar and universal stand and do justice by scrapping the most discriminatory Rule for Reservation in Promotion, being implemented in Madhya Pradesh since 2002 . This is one provision that could be compared with the worst form of racism anywhere in the world.

When the semester system has been acknowledged and accepted the world over as the best practice both in terms of teaching and evaluation at the higher education level by  universities, institutions of technology,  medical education and ivy league colleges, the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday, responded to the students’ demand and announced at a specially convened students “Panchayat” (convention) the decision to scrap the semester system at the graduation level from the next academic session.

The Chief minister also made several other announcements. He declared that the state government will now pay the fees for all students securing more than 85% marks in Higher Secondary, whether they belong to the reserved SC/ST or the unreserved general category.

Both these decisions could be described as politically motivated. The announcement to do away with the semester system, it is being said in knowledgeable circles, is the result of the ruling party managers’ over-riding desire to involve more and more students in students’ politics and make them available during the crucial electioneering for the 2018 State Assembly poll next winter when the ruling BJP would be playing every card for the fourth successive win Madhya Pradesh.

There are not many who are convinced by the government’s new decision that it would be paying the fees of all meritorious students cutting across the reserved and the unreserved categories.  Leaders of the SAPAKS Movement (members of the SAPAKS Society who are crusading and want the immediate scrapping of the provision for Reservation in promotion –  a regime being perpetuated balatantly by the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government showing gross disregard to the interests of government employees belonging to the unreserved general category). They are pointing out that if the government is really serious, judicious and does not want to discriminate between different social groups, it would take a similar and universal stand and do justice by scrapping the most discriminatory Rule for Reservation in Promotion, being implemented in Madhya Pradesh since 2002 . This is one provision that could be compared with the worst form of racism anywhere in the world.
