Income Tax sleuths raid TN chief Secretary’s residence
Chennai: Income tax department conducted a search and seizure operation at the residential premises ofTamil Nadu Chief Secretary P Rama Mohana Rao, on Wednesday.
The raid on TN’s top bureaucrat’s house by the Income Tax department is being described in official circles as too late an action. While an officer said nothing will come out of it another bureaucrat described it as part of a larger political strategy of the BJP to build its image by conveying the message to the people that no one will be spared in the war against corruption.
Raids began early morning at Rao’s official residence at Anna Nagar and also a few homes of his relatives. According to Income Tax sources the search and seizure operation is linked to recent raids on establishments and houses of a few Tamil Nadu businessmen that led to the seizure of 100 kg of bullion and a huge amount of cash in new currency. While one of these businessmen is said to be having links with the chief secretary’s son Vikram Rao, it is also being pointed out that a few businessmen raided earlier were also close to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and one of his Cabinet colleagues.
Rao, IAS-1985, took over as Chief Secretary in June this year. He is known for his political clout which he developed due to his close proxity to J Yayalalithaa during his earlier posting as Income Tax sleuths raid TN chief Secretary’s residence
