24 convicted in the Gulbarg Society massacre case
Ahmedabad: The Sessions court of Judge PB Desai today convicted 24 persons, including VHP leader Atul Vaidya, in the Gulbarg Society massacre case of 2002, in which 69 people, including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, were burnt to death.
It was during the Gujarat riots when on 28 February 2002, the Gulbarg Society at Chamanpura in Ahmedabad, which was a neighbourhood of the minorities, was targetted by a mob that set on fire most of the houses. Former Congress Member of Parliament Ehsan Jafri along with many others, was burnt alive.
Thirty-six of the 60 accused facing trial in the Gulbarg case were declared as ‘not guilty’ by the court, which refused to accept the conspiracy charge by the prosecution.
