Brussels: The death toll in today’s terror attack on the airport and a city metro station has risen to 31 and a score of others have been critically injured. The number of those killed is likely to increase.
State of emergency has been declared in Belgium and its border has been sealed. A 3-day mourning has also been declared.
Some media reports are saying that ISIS is behind the attack on Brussels but these appear to be based on speculations at this stage. Meanwhile, according to the Belgian public broadcaster VRT, the Belgian police have found a Kalashnikov assault rifle next to dead attacker at Brussels airport.
Security was tightened across the jittery continent and transport links paralysed after the bombings that Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel branded “blind, violent and cowardly”.
The departure area of Zaventem Airport was the main target. It was about 8:00am (1130 IST) when twin blasts ripped through the building inflicting heavy loss of lives and extensive damage to the building. There was another blast at the Maalbeek metro station near the European Union’s main buildings. Maalbeek, a suburb of Brussels is now under the scanner of the security forces.
