New Delhi: While Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi was shown black flags, Deputy Leader of the main Opposition Congress in Rajya Sabha and former Union Minister Anand Sharma was allegedly attacked by sharp edged weapons when they went to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) here this evening to attend a “Save JNU” rally and express solidarity with the University students who are protesting against the arrest of the JNU Students’ Union President Kanhaiya Kumar on sedition charges.

In a statement, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said it is a black day for India’s democracy as the deputy leader of Congress in Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma was attacked with sharp edged weapons today by government protected ABVP goons on JNU campus. ABVP is the students’ wing of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

On Saturday the police went for preventive detention and picked up seven JNU students.Earlier Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union President was arrested on sedition charges and criminal conspiracy for holding a protest in the university premises where anti-India and pro-Pakistan slogans were raised. He has been remanded to three-day police custody by a Delhi court.
