New Delhi : Support and protest on Afzal Guru episode resulted in action being taken by Delhi police, which has arrested JNU’s Student Union’s President as a follow up of search operations in the campus. Kanhaiya Kumar, JNUSU President was arrested by Delhi police today afternoon. Plainsclothed policemen entered into the campus, conducted a search operation at nook and corner of the campus, checked inside hostels, convention centre and entire corridors of the campus, and finally picked up the Student Union President, as narrated by a student under anonymity.
After some time, taking cognizance of the arrest, and non-ceasing follow-on protests for and against the arrest by other student groups, university’s Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar issued a statement saying that the entire sequence of events appeared to be a work of fringe elements functioning within the campus.
These were VC’s exact words — While the JNU community upholds the right to free debate on campus, the University strongly condemns the use of the University as a platform for activities that violate the Constitution and the laws of the land. However, there could be aberrations where fringe sections misuse the freedom provided…. While that problem would be appropriately addressed in this case, the University would also take steps to protect the academic atmosphere and the environment for vibrant discussion that JNU has always provided and stands for.
