New Delhi : Fugitive underworld don Chhota Rajan (aka Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalje) has been arrested in Bali on Sunday, under a joint investigative teamwork of Australian and Bali police, in co-ordination with NSA (National Security Advisor) Ajit Doval, and can be rated as a major success step towards fulfillment of such promises made by the Modi government.
When erstwhile PM candidate, the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken prior to Lok Sabha elections, about the major role of stealth in such operations (did America announce to the world that they are going to Pakistan to nab Laden ? We will also work towards catching Dawood and bringing him to India, but stealth would be the keyword), apprehensions rose about the success rate of such promises. The first step towards such operations saw light when Ajit Doval, NSA, former head of the Indian Intelligence Bureau (IB), who had been trailing Chhota Rajan and his henchmen to get leaks on D gang’s activities for years, found base in this Chhota Rajan trail and converted the chase into an arrest on foreign soil, with total co-ordinated effort of Australian and Bali police resources.
Chhota Rajan was the trusted aide of Dawood Ibrahim, who turned foes and made Chhota Rajan a big name who ran parallel gang and indulged in many gang-wars against his ex-aide Dawood. After 1993 blasts, Rajan openly claimed himself to be Hindu don and won accolades from political parties like Shiv Sena.· Mumbai crime branch had made a failed attempt to convince Chhota Rajan to surrender and help the Indian agencies to rein in Dawood. · Rajan had survived a bid on his life in September 2000, when Dawood’s key aide Chhota Shakeel opened fire at him in Bangkok.
Finally, almost twenty-seven years after he fled India, Rajan, wanted for heinous crimes ranging from murder and extortion to smuggling, drug trafficking and threatening Bollywood personalities, was arrested in Bali on Sunday, paving way for Indian agencies to catch hold of him and dig out more information about the big fish in hiding. Government sources said a CBI and Mumbai Police team would travel to Indonesia to process his deportation, after which he would be in the custody of Mumbai police. Rajan is at present being interrogated by Bali police and Indian intelligence officials stationed in Bali.
Coinciding with his detention at Bali,Mumbai crime branch carried out raids on all residential and commercial properties of Khushi developers (Chhota Rajan’s construction company) and his politician brother Deepak Nikhalje’s flats in Mumbai.
