New Delhi : The infamous Uber cab rape case finally found its conclusion today when a Delhi court stated Uber cab driver Shiv Kumar Yadav as guilty of raping a 25-year-old woman in his taxi on December 5 last year. Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja convicted Yadav for various offences like guilty for rape, causing grievous bodily harm and for the offence of endangering the life of a woman under the Indian Penal Code. He will be sentenced on October 22.
This verdict came in as a source of belief on the Indian judicial system as the victim’s father sighed relief as soon as the verdict was passed in the court room, where he had been eagerly waiting for justice to his ward. His daughter was caught on the wrong side of safety and faced humiliation when she was raped by the cab driver while returning to her residence in Inderlok after finishing a day of work at her office in Gurgaon, where she was employed as a Finance executive.
Driver Shiv Kumar Yadav was arrested on December 7 from Mathura and is currently in judicial custody. Special Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava had earlier said that an accused could be convicted on basis of sole testimony of the survivor, if the testimony would be justified trustworthy. In this particular case, he had shown confidence on the evidences and had stated that the evidences would be sufficient to hold Yadav guilty and that all the 28 prosecution witnesses corroborated the case against the accused, which could further strengthen the victim’s plea.
