Monday frenzy triggers stampede in Jharkhand Temple – 10 dead

deoghar temple stampedeDeoghar, Jharkhand: Shravan Somvar triggers stampede in the holy shrines of Belabagan Temple in Deoghar town of Jharkhand.About 10 people have been killed and around 50 injured in the incident.

With a view to visit the temple on Monday morning as per the auspicious beliefs and prayer schedules, devotees had begun to assemble in the Belabagan temple  on Deogarh-Jassidih, about 350 kilometres from Ranchi, from the intervening night period. At the early morning hours today, around 5 am, a rumor about the Temple gate being opened triggered huge rush of devotees towards the temple door, causing stampede and unruly breaking of queues. The temple rush resulted in injuries to over 50 persons including men, women and children. The crowd comprised of around 75,000 devotees stacked in a 15 kms long queue. Sudden movement of people resulted in chaos and made it difficult for the administration to control..

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the situation.after having spoken with the Chief Minister Raghubar Das for speedy relief to the injured and stranded piligrims.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also condoled the loss of lives due to stampede at Deoghar. Rajnath Singh has been appraised by the Jharkhand CM about the situation in Deoghar after the stampede and a request has been forwarded to the Home Ministry for extra Rapid Action Force (RAF) deployment.

Rajnath Singh via Union Home Secretary LC Goyal has executed dispersal of two RAF companies to Deoghar for better crowd and security management, in addition to the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) already deployed in the State.

CM Raghubar Das has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of those killed in today’s stampede. The injured would be given Rs 50,000 as compensation.
