Australia Today: Police operation targets outlaw motor cycle gangs
Tasmania Police in conjunction with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) National Anti-Gangs Squad (NAGS) and other state police forces including New South Wales Police, Victoria Police, and Western Australia Police conducted 41 search warrants from Tuesday to Thursday this past week. Members from the Australian Taxation Office, Department of Immigration and Border Protection, the Australian Crime Commission and Australian Customs and Border Protection Service were also involved in the operation.

Major tourism wins in Northern Australia
Australian Minister for Trade and Investment, Andrew Robb, responsible for tourism, haswelcomed the benefits the Northern Australia White Paper will have for Australia’s tourism industry. The White Paper released this weekend recognises the importance of tourism not only to the development of Northern Australia but to the Australian economy as a whole. In particular, reforms to visitor visas including the introduction of a 10-year validity visa for Chinese visitors, roll-out of e-lodgement for China and India, trialling a fast track service and enabling Chinese language lodgement of visitor visa applications, will ensure Australia is well placed to capture a growing share of these markets.
$1.7 million for regional arts in first grant round
Individual artists, groups and arts organisations in regional areas across the country will benefit from a $1.7 million investment through the first round of the Australia Council’s new grants program. The Australia Council received more than 1,700 applications from arts organisations, individuals and groups for projects and development grants in this round, and of the 273 that were funded about 20 per cent were for artists and arts organisations in regional Australia. The Australia Council has a long-standing commitment to supporting vibrant and sustainable art across Australia, including funding artists and arts organisations in regional Australia and developing audiences in these areas.
